The First Time I Saw the Osmonds Perform
Later that summer after Alan and Suzanne got married, Wayne called me on the phone at home and invited me to come to Las Vegas to see him perform. I didn't want to be too aggressive but I was curious about their show. Would it be like some of the rock and roll concerts that I had been to at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City?
If everyone had been like I was as a teenager, the pop, rock entertainment and music industry wouldn't exist. I only remember buying one record before meeting Wayne and it wasn't an Osmond record. I never paid to go see a group perform either. My parents had taken me to a show in Reno or Lake Tahoe once where some older woman sang that they wanted to see, some musicals, etc. but never any pop or rock and roll groups.
The only time that I ever went to a pop or rock concert was when a date invited me. I remember attending "The Carpenters," "Elton John" and a few rock groups, so I was curious what kind of atmosphere was at an Osmond concert in a Las Vegas casino. I was positive it couldn't be all that uplifting. I talked my parents into driving me to Las Vegas to see one of their shows.
Almost as soon as I walked into the Tropicana hotel a girl from our ward in Provo spotted me and came up to tell me how she had spent the whole afternoon with Wayne up in their penthouse. I decided right then that I wasn't going to be like all the other girls and contact him. The girl asked me if I wanted her to tell Wayne and the Osmonds that I was there at the hotel and I told her "no." She made it sound like she and Wayne were seeing each other and looked a little relieved when I told her I didn't want her to tell him I was in town.
My dad kept telling me to contact Wayne but I told him that I really didn't know how. He suggested that I leave a message at the front desk but I had already decided that I wasn't going to tell him I was there. I was hoping that the girl in our ward would tell him, but of course she never did.
My parents and I went to the concert which I loved. The Osmonds were all so talented, had amazing production numbers and I remember the show having an upbeat, happy feeling. It was the first time that I realized what most of their hit records were, even though I did recognize the songs from hearing them on the radio. That summer "Love Me For A Reason" was released and I remember listening to that beautiful song all summer on the radio.
On the drive home I remember feeling disappointed that I hadn't been able to see or talk to Wayne but at least now I knew what their show was all about. I remember sleeping in the back seat of the car almost all the way from Las Vegas to Bountiful. Little did I know that this one show in Vegas was the beginning of many, many years of continuous concerts and shows in the future.

Aw . . . your first experience with us crazy fans! I'm so glad you survived us! Although, I never got to meet any of the Osmonds till 1983 at their Concord, CA hotel (this would be the concert where there was a car accident that knocked out all the power!!)
The Osmond wives, I'm sure, must be very strong women to have survived being married to an Osmond. And a lot of trust. My husband lives in another city for the week and is home on the weekends. This could not work unless there was trust.
Kathy, I love reading your blog. You are a very good writer!! Thanks for being such a wonderful person and sharing.
Aww. What a sweet nice story, Kathy. Kathy here is another hint you were falling for Wayne. You were upset with the other girl. That happens to anyone you are falling for.
So Wayne hasn't proposed to you yet and you two were still dating. Wayne better get going. LOL, but we know he does.
I wish I was around in the 70s to see the guys concert. I bet it was soo rocking. Oh how I want to go in a time machine and see their concerts. See their popularity very huge.
Nice picture of Wayne.
Just as long as you got the okay from Wayne and his sibs and sis in laws, keep the story coming, Kathy. I really do love hearing about this. It helps me learn more about them.
I hope you and Wayne have a great weekend.
Hi, Kathy,
Not to pry, but how did Wayne react when he found out you were there and didn't contact him?
Thanks,
Carla
Thats neat that your parents agreed to drive you to Las Vegas to see a concert. The first Osmond concert I went to was in Sept. 1975 in Topeka, Ks. They did a show at the fairgrounds, and this was the last stop on a world tour. We were disappointed that they didnt come out after the show to meet people or sign autographs, but years later I realized that in those days they couldnt do that because of the crowds, and also, being the last stop on a world tour means they were all tired and wanting to go home, so it was ok. I sat in the second row, and noticed that Alan yelled at the sound guy several times about something, but it sounded good to me.
bonjour kathy, wayne is too cute on this photo!!!you 've made a very very beautifull couple...nathalie
That is so neat! Yeah, when did you tell Wayne you were there? Their shows were so much fun, I've only been to two and they were back in the 70's. One my parents took me to was at the arena, we ended up with 4th row seats right off the center. Things were certainly different with the crowds back then. I remember Donny singing one of his mushy songs and leaning over the edge of the stage to touch hands with some of the girls. Alan had to rescue him or they would of pulled him off the stage!!! The other concert was at the fair, I had front row seats. I remember that was the first concert where I met a "Marie" fan. It was kind of fun sitting by a guy at one of the concerts, he was so into her he couldn't even talk when she was performing, or take pictures for that matter. I asked him if he wanted me to take pictures of Marie, he just shook his head and handed me his camera.
The two shows I went to were awesome, I did take my youngest son to see 2nd Generation, Alan's boys, at State Fair - that was like 18 years ago. Got to meet Alan that summer. I really noticed the difference with the crowds at that point.
I guess I would of been kind of put off by that girls reaction too. Still think you should of contacted Wayne, was he upset when he found out you were there and didn't let him know? Poor guy was probably looking for you!!!
I'll never forget my first Osmond concert. It was August 17, 1976 in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a dream come true. I had already been a fan for four years at that time. Now it's been 38 years and counting. I love this family and I have had many Osmond dreams come true in that 38 years.
Kathy, I think you should write a book! Love your stories! - Lori Mroczek
Loved the story! Years ago I lived in England and wanted to go to a concert The Osmonds had in London, but I was only 11 and my parents felt I was to young! In high school I lived in California, but things never worked out to see them around there either! My first job was at Disneyland, I always hoped they would come and do a concert while I was working but that didn't happen either! Lol....
Finally, they did a get together in Tunica, MS. In I think right around year 2000?? I talked my husband into taking me! I believe we went to the last concert they did. It was Wayne, Merril and Jay. I don't believe their turn out was as good as they would have liked and you could kind of tell they were ready to be done with their Tunica experience! Lol.... I don't blame them for that, and the casino they were at has now gone out of business! The show was still fantastic to me!!! I loved every minute! I was to shy to stick around to meet or greet them then and remember being disappointed that I didn't!
Last Christmas my husband and I went to Branson for the first time and got to see the Christmas show! This time it was Wayne, Jay and David - Alan's son! I was a little disappointed Merril or Jimmy was not there! My husband did talk me into going take a picture with them at intermission! I was so nervous! Of course they were all very nice! I have the sillyest expression on my face in the pic! Not my best for sure! Lol....
Finally just a few weeks ago I got to see all 4 brothers! Once again my husband talked me into going get another picture and meeting them! He didn't have to push to hard!! Lol... I was still very nervous, but at least am happier about the picture this time! That is when Wayne commented on my 'flippy' hair! Ha! Really funny!
I'm hoping we get to go again next Christmas! Thanks for your post and allowing us a walk down memory lane with you!
The first time i ever saw them was when i was living in London. It was in the mid 70s. (i didnt move out to Utah till 1985 after Olive and George converted me on there mission). My parents had told me i had to be 15 before i could go and i belive it was at Earls Court. I remember waiting outside and there were just crowds and crowds of people, you couldnt move. Then they arrived in black cars and the cars couldnt drive more then maybe a mile an hour due to the girls all pressing against the cars. They had police standing all around the cars, spread out with there arms out to each other and walking slowly with the cars so the girls couldnt get to them, lol. I remember thinking how scary that would be in the cars. I think my parents would have died if they had seen the crowds i was in the middle of, lol.
You know Kathy--as others have said, you should really write a book! I'm sure there's tons of stories that you could tell that we've never heard. I've sometimes wondered what a tough life you've all had to endure (from a wives' and families prospective) it had to have been rough at times with them being gone so much. Thanks for sharing--it's been so enjoyable to read. (just a side note--in those early photos (like the one posted) I always thought Wayne looked a little like Bobby Goldsburough (spell) i don't know why--maybe just the way his hair style was at the time?? who knows lol)
The first time I saw the Osmonds perform was at the Tropicana in 1974 also. I couldn't believe how talented they all were too. I'll always remember them dancing to the Hoe Down which was a very long routine which I really enjoyed since I've taken dance lessons. I was with my family and we ALL became fans after that show!!
Love your stories, Kathy. You and the other Osmond wives are very strong & secure women. Good for you! You're an inspiration! In past stories, you mentioned your first impressions of several of the Osmonds. I am wondering what your first impression of Merrill was? Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Wendy : D
I have wonderful memories of my very first Osmond concert and it includes my family too! My parents divorced when I was young, so my summers were spent with my Dad at his parents home. I loved and cherish those summers! My Aunt Alice (my dad's sister) surprised my sister and I with tickets to see the Osmonds perform at the Miami Beach Convention Center in July 1972. So here I was, a wide-eyed 14 year old excited beyond belief that I was going to see the Osmonds. These boys I had been following in teen magazines for while now!! It turned out to be a big family trip because my grandparents came along with us from Key West and stayed back at the hotel but our Aunt, Uncle and Dad took us to the concert. I begged them to get us there early, which they did and in fact when we pulled in to the huge parking lot I asked my Uncle to drive around behind the convention center. The first Osmond I ever layed eyes on was Alan, who was coming off the tour bus and flashed a huge, dimpled smile. I called his name and he smiled and waved back.
We got out of the car, and headed in to the convention center and there were hardly any fans there - only set up crews and convention center workers. We walked through, purchasing our posters, programs and fan merchandise and headed to our seats. Once we settled in, I noticed a commotion off to the side of the stage and it was Marie with Mother Osmond. Marie was being a mischievous 13 year old, swinging the dressing room doors only to laugh because the girls gathered around would scream!! I managed to just smile, wave hello to both of them and went back to my seat to enjoy the show. Well, I did but not as much as my Dad did. He got up several times during the concert and dance in the aisle. I kept telling him to sit down because he was embarrasing me, but he smiled and kept right on dancing! I was mortified at the time, but over the years and the last 12 years since he has passed away - I look back with pure adoration and what a loving and fun father I had. Until the day he passed, he always said that that was one of his most cherished trips with his children. Thank you for jogging my memory and reaching deep into a sentimental time in my life. Wishing you continued blessings always and encouragement to keep on writing.....Lynn
Loving your memories Kathy but we haven't yet heard about your first impression on Merrill...bless him!

OK. Since somebody else said something about the picture. Forgive me Kathy for saying this, but Wayne's a cutie in that picture. Now I'm going to run.
Wayne said that I didn't tell him I was at the Flamingo until after we were married. I think I might have told him after we were engaged. We can't remember. Wayne said he was angry that I didn't contact him but he just invited me casually and knew that I wouldn't come anyway. Ha! Boy, was he wrong.
Aww. Wayne missed you too. Wayne was falling for you too. Did you explain why that girl was there in their penthouse or was she lying just to get under your skin.
So Wayne thought you weren't coming, huh. Yep he was wrong.
I agree Kathy - you should write a book with your memories - love reading all your stories - keep them up xx
